The Social Science Department of University High School values critical thinking, various forms of communication skills, historical understanding and insight, and the ability to empathize with others. All of the following standards reflect these values and are based on course-specific content.
Social Science Content
Students will be able to do the following concerning their knowledge of content and the foundations of the various Social Sciences: explain significant political, economic, and social ideologies as well as their impact at the local, state, national, and international level; understand significant events including cause-and-effect relationships, the origins of those events, and their short- and long-term implications; and know specific personalities and recognize that individual decisions have consequences that affect the way people, groups, and nations association with one another.
Reading Informational Texts – Primary and Secondary Sources
Students will be able to do the following concerning the reading and analysis of primary and secondary source materials: cite specific textual evidence while connecting insights gained from specific details; summarize the central ideas or information; determine the meaning of key words and phrases; evaluate explanations and differing points of view while considering author’s premises, claims, and historical evidence; analyze the complexity of its structure; and integrate and evaluate multiple sources of information.
Writing for a Variety of Purposes
Students will be able to do the following concerning writing, either informative/explanatory or argument-based: produce a clear and coherent piece; plan, revise, edit, and re-write when necessary or required; avoid plagiarism and overreliance on any once source; follow a standard format for citation; and demonstrate an understanding of the subject/topic/position under investigation.
Speaking and Listening
Students will be able to do the following concerning class discussions: appropriately analyze the topic/issue at hand; use functional language in responding to a variety of questions and comments; show evidence of an understanding of the overarching purpose of the discussion; control emotional reactions when responding to questions and comments; cite specific and accurate evidence to support claims; neither dominate nor disappear during the course of discussions; make contributions that are relevant; move the discussion forward by listening and paying attention to the comments of others; and assist in fostering an open and mature environment in which all students and their ideas are respected.
Researching to Build Knowledge
Students will be able to do the following concerning research: conduct research projects to answer a research question: narrow or broaden the question when appropriate; gather and synthesize information from multiple authoritative print and digital sources; asses the strengths and limitations of each source; and draw evidence from sources to support their position concerning the initial research question.
