This past week, a number of U-High student athletes were recognized for being named all-conference athletes for the fall sports. Congratulations to our students on their hard work at dedication! Boys cross country: Dane Alexander, Jared Schuckman, Sean Supan and Matthew Zacharias. Girls Cross Country: Mackie Madix, Emmy Mussey and Lyndsey Wolters. Football: Doug Holmes, Cole Tandy, Mark Widdel and Ty Ziebarth. Boys Golf: Ben Bazan, Ethan Huynh, Brevin Knight, Alex Kullman, Dallas Koth and Tony Palumbo. Girls Golf: Abby Klein, Maddison Murphy, Lexi Onsrud and Jadyn Spinks. Girls Swim and Dive: Lilly Culp, Jade Fung, Sidney Kennedy, Poleena Kovalaske, Sammy Lighty and Dana Siverly. Congratulations to Kee Randolph for being crowned the 2017 Mr. U-High. He and the other 11 contestants helped members of the Student Senate and U-Build Club bring in over $4200 for the construction of a home in Haiti. If anyone is still interested in donating please contact Mr. McDowell or Dr. Fitz.

U-High is proud to announce that 36 members of our music department have been chosen to participate in the 2017 Illinois Music Educators District Festival! Congratulations to these talented student musicians! Band: Jonathan Boudreaux, Alena Culbertson, Alex Diffor, Nathanael Kim and Jenny Park. Choir: Allie Beam, Rylee Camp, Celestino Duley, Nick Dunne, Kate Embry, Anna Greenfield, Gabi Heptinstall, Izzie Jacobsen, Josh Kuhn, Abby Naden, Alyssa Pacheco, Gabe Pfister, Annellia Pierce, Daniel Ray, Stephanie Soukup and Catherine Winger. Orchestra: Olivia Bolles, Zoey Carlson, Katelyn DeKeersgieter, Henry Earnest, Anastasia Ervin, Veronica Ervin, Alicia Han, James Han, Kirsten Koehler, Rene Mohammadi, Joshua Nepomuceno, Irene Park, Yvin Shin, Joseph Suh and Matthew Suh. The festival takes place this Saturday, November 18, and will conclude with a 4:30 pm concert at Olivet Nazarene University.

The U-High Speech Team continued their season this past weekend at Normal Community West High School and Wheaton North High School. The team overall had five individual champions with Lauren Dubravec taking first place in Varsity Informative Speaking at Wheaton North, and Allie Beam taking first place in Varsity Informative Speaking at Normal West. Additionally, Nick King took first place in Junior Varsity Original Oratory, Natalie Thomison won Varsity Prose Reading, and Yvin Shin took first place in Junior Varsity Special Occasion Speaking all at Normal West High School. Congrats to them and the rest of our incredible speakers!

After Friday’s loss to Althoff Catholic, the Pioneers came back and beat St. Viator on Saturday 25-21, 19-25, 25-19! The team earned third place in the Class 3A state tournament at Redbird Arena. This was the sixth state trophy in school history and the first since 2000. Jessica McDowell had 12 digs and Amber Juarez had 11 digs. Isabel Schaefbauer had 11 kills, 14 assists and 8 digs. Addy Loeffler had 11 kills and Alexis Engst contributed 17 assists. Congratulations ladies!

The U-High girls swim and dive team finished in second place in this year’s sectional meet at Normal Community. Six U-High participants qualified for the state meet this weekend! Dana Siverly advanced in diving. Lilly Culp advanced with second place finishes in the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke. Poleena Kovalaske advanced with a second place finish in the 50 freestyle. Sidney Kennedy finished in 4th in the 500 freestyle and will also advance. U-High will also have a relay team at the state meet. Lilly Culp, Poleena Kovalaske, Caroline Bazan and Sammy Lighty advanced in the 400 freestyle relay event. Coach Michelle Meyer was also recognized at the event as she was awarded the sectional diving coach of the year award. Congratulations and good luck ladies!
