Why would a teacher use an audio recording program like Audacity? One example:
For students in freshman English, Audacity allows them to create sophisticated recordings to go with their study of the Odyssey (a story originally told orally!) The students have to recast an episode from The Odyssey in modern language and their retelling has to emphasize the dominant tone and theme of the piece. The students’ audio broadcast has to work to create a visual image of events for an audience who cannot see the events, but can only hear the broadcast. They have to incorporate sound effects that enhance both the imagery of the story and the tone they have selected. You can view the assignment directions here.
